BOMBAY: Mr. M.A. Jinnah, President of the All-India Muslim League, was attacked with a knife by a visitor who came to interview him this afternoon [July 26]. The visitor was a Muslim who has been arrested by the Police. Mr. Jinnah sustained minor injuries on his chin and hand.

Mr. Jinnah’s Secretary states that the assailant is believed to be a Khaksar.

A Muslim came to Mr. Jinnah’s residence and sought an interview without an appointment. When Mr. Jinnah’s Secretary pointed out that no appointment had been fixed up, the visitor is alleged to have started a row whereupon Mr. Jinnah who was in an adjacent room came out and intervened. Thereupon the visitor attempted to stab Mr. Jinnah in his neck but Mr. Jinnah caught hold of his hand, thus preventing a knife attack on his neck. …

In an interview to the “Associated Press” Mr. Jinnah said: “Although it was a serious and well-planned attack, by the grace of God, no serious injury has been inflicted on me. I don’t want to say anything just now but I appeal to the Muslims to remain calm and cool and let us all thank Providence for this miraculous escape. I regret that this cowardly assault should have been made on me by a man who, I understand, is a Muslim”. — Agency
