(NEW YORK) Misses Chandralehka and Nayan­tara Pandit, nieces of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who have come to the United States to study at Wellesley College, will be the guests of Mrs. John Gunther, wife of the noted author and war correspondent, at her home in Amagansett, Long Island, until their school term begins on August 25.

Chandralehka has been awarded the first scholarship presented under the Mayling Soong Foundation. Madame Chiang Kai-shek, an alumnus of Wellesley College, for whom the Foundation was named, arranged the two girls’ trip to the United States.

On the evening of July 6, the girls attended a dinner to commemorate the sixth anniversary of Japan’s attack on China. Pearl Buck, American author, and Lin Yutang, noted Chinese writer, spoke at the dinner. “We can hardly believe that we are here,” Chandralehka told reporters who interviewed the girls. “We have to pinch ourselves every so often to see if it is really true.” Pandit Nehru’s nieces feel that they already have a link with the United States since they attended an American school in India.

Officials of the Mayling Soong Foundation, which is supporting the Wellesley College scholarship, said that the scholarship is only one of several activities to promote better understanding between the United States and friendly Far East nations.
