KARACHI, June 1: Police and Rangers on Wednesday arrested 22 persons for creating law and order situation in Malir following the funeral of a young man who was killed during Tuesday’s clash between two groups. Police said that following the burial of Muhammad Mukhtar, who was laid to rest in the Khokhrapar graveyard, enraged youths took to the streets ransacking shop and pushcarts. Firing was also reported in the area. However, no one was reported hurt.

As the disturbances broke out, police used teargas shells to control the situation. Police and Rangers chased the youths into the narrow streets of the Jinnah Colony.

CCPO Tariq Jamil said overall the situation remained under control, there was an incident of violence, but law enforcement agencies managed the situation. However, he confirmed that around 22 youths were arrested by the police.

On Tuesday, a guard of Imam Khomeini Hospital located in Jaffar-i-Tayyar Society had opened fire at the mob which was moving towards the hospital. Muhammad Mukhtar and three others were wounded. Muhammad Mukhtar later died of bullet wounds.

“We have lodged an FIR against the guard, but he is still absconding,” DIG Operations Mushtaq Shah said.

The incident led to a clash between the two religio-political groups of the area. A tense stand off was reported till early Wednesday morning following the Tuesday’s casualty.

Police said that groups from Jinnah Colony and Jaffar-i-Tayyar had been engaged in a dispute for the last few days over installation of a board of Masjid Farooq-i-Azam at Nade Ali Mor.
