KARACHI: Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested an alleged gangster wanted in several criminal cases, foiling a plot to sabotage the peace in Lyari during the forthcoming general election.

The Kalakot police arrested the suspect, identified as Majid alias Maharani, after an “encounter”. He was a “commander” of the Jabbar Jhengu-led gang in Lyari. He was involved in targeted killing of law enforcers, extortion and other heinous crimes. There were at least 11 cases registered against him at the Baghdadi police station alone.

After the operation was launched in Karachi in 2013, the held suspect went underground and recently returned to Lyari.

“He was reactivating his group to sabotage the peace in Lyari during the forthcoming general election,” said a police officer.
