ZTBL deny SBP again in women’s T20

KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)’s hopes of defeating the formidable Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) in the ongoing first Departmental Women’s T20 Cricket Championship were dashed yet again on Monday when the favourites sealed an eight-wicket success.

Opting to bat first at the National Stadium, SBP struggled to 109-7 with Sidra Amin making 31 and skipper Aliya Riaz 27. ZTBL skipper Sana Mir claimed three wickets for 23 runs while fellow off-spinner Nida Dar took 2-17.

ZTBL made short work of their modest target as they romped to victory with 21 deliveries to spare. Opener Muneeba Ali struck seven fours in scoring 42 from 39 balls. Muneeba put on 50 for the opening wicket with the experienced Nain Abidi (19) before Bismah Maroof (29) and Javeria Wadood Khan (21) added 45 for the unbroken third-wicket stand.

In the day’s other fixture, PCB XI ran out comfortable winners against the winless Higher Education Commission (HEC) by seven wickets.

HEC, put into bat, collected 116-8 with Fazila Ikhlaq contributing a fine 56 off just 34 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes. Seamer Sania Khan picked up three wickets for 19 runs in four overs. PCB XI knocked off the required runs in 17.4 overs for the loss of three wickets. Umaima Sohail (35) and Kainat Imtiaz (29 not out) shared a third-wicket partnership of 57. Kainat and Fazila were adjudged joint recipients of the player-of-the-match award.

Aqeel, Abid share All Pakistan Tennis title

LAHORE: Aqeel Khan and Mohammad Abid shared the SNGPL All Pakistan Tennis title after the final was called off during the second set due to rain here at the Bagh-i-Jinnah on Monday.

The final was being played under overcast conditions with Abid having won the first set 6-3 and ahead in the second set 4-2 before heavy rain stopped the play.

The match-referee did not allow resumption of play due to a wet court. According to the decision 60 percent prize money went to Abid and 40 per cent to Aqeel.In girls’ final Sarah Mehboob of Wapda beat Noor Malik of ZTBL 6-2, 6-1.

In the boys’ under-18 final, Mohammad Shoaib of SNGPL beat his fellow department colleague Saqib Umer 6-3, 6-3 while Shima Tahir beat Maha Said 6-3, 6-0 for the girls’ crown.

Hamid Israr beat Uzair Khan 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the boys’ under-14 final while Bilal Asim and Shaeel Tahir claimed the boys’ under-12 doubles title, beating Ehtasam Humion and Hamaza Roman 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.

The teams of Talha Waheed and Maj Adnan, Arif Feroz and Mohammad Khalid Ahmed Babar and Brig Ghazanfar claimed the seniors 40-plus, 50-plus and 60-plus doubles crowns.—Sports Reporter

Karachi move to top spot in SKL

LAHORE: Karachi Zorawars moved to the top of the Pool ‘A’ after beating Lahore Thunders 51-32 in the Super Kabaddi League here on Sunday.

Karachi, with three wins and one defeat in four matches are flying high with six points.

Gwadar Bahadurs — who also had gained six points from four outings but are in the second spot with 22 aggregated points against 24 of the leaders — beat Sahiwal Bulls 36-34 after closely contested encounter.

In another thrilling match on the night, Multan Sikandars survived a scare by beating Faisalabad Sherdils 33-30 to maintain their second place in the Pool ‘B’ with four points.

Kashmir Janbaz, trailing in the fourth place in the pool, stunned leaders Peshawar Haiders 33-30.

Lahore Thunders remained winless to remain at the bottom of Pool ‘A’ while Islamabad All Stars are also languishing in the last slot of Pool ‘B’.—Sports Reporter

Zahid stars in T20 final

KARACHI: A brisk half-century from Syed Zahid Hussain inspired Parco to the 1st T20 Champions Cricket League title with a tense last-ball win over Meezan Bank in the final at the Landhi Gymkhana.

Batting first, Meezan Bank made 145-4 with Afsar Irfan scoring 48 with the help of six boundaries and Sadaqat Ali 36.

Parco, in reply, lost eight wickets in reaching the 146-run target. Skipper Zahid, who was later declared man-of-the-match, starred with a brilliant 65 off 57 deliveries that included seven fours.

The best batsman award went to Mohammad Nizam for scoring 286 runs, while Sayyam Khan won the best bowler prize for taking 13 wickets for 128 runs in the competition.
