KARACHI: Local pugilists continued their stranglehold when they fought their way in 10 of the 14 finals that were decided in the Sindh-Balochistan boxing series at the Begum Nusrat Bhutto Community Hall in Faqir Colony, Orangi Town, on Sunday.

The juniors turned out to be most successful winning five of the seven semi-final bouts through Tabish (42 kg), Shahbaz Jan (46 kg), Shehroz Rana (48 kg), Asad Afridi and Mahmood (52 kg).

Zubair (44 kg) and Javed Hameed (50 kg) shone for the visitors and prevented a sweep by local players.

The remaining five semi-finals will be decided on the penultimate day.

Sindh women’s also excelled and punched their way into two finals. Rubiya defeated Sharaf Naz by 2-1 verdict in the 44 kg while Sara, daughter of 1972 Olympian Malang Baloch, coasted home to a 3-0 over Summaya in the 69 kg.

They will be joined by winners of the remaining five semi-finals after their bouts on Monday.

Balochistan’s Zafar Iqbal and Mohammad Qasim taught Maaz Khan and Shahzeb a lesson defeating them by 2-1 respectively to propel in the men’s 49 and 52 kg finals.

However, Amir (56 kg), Irfanullah (60 kg) and Hammad Hussain (64 kg) did Sindh proud by conjuring up victories over their respective opponents

Meanwhile, the remaining men’s semi-finals will be held at the Ustad Mohammad Satto Boxing Stadium in Lyari on Monday.

The women’s bouts will take place at North Karachi Gymkhana while the juniors will compete at Mauripur National Boxing Club, Hawkesbay on Monday.

The closing ceremony will be held at the Kakri Ground on Tuesday.
