LAHORE: The city is going to get its first milk-vending machine next month as the Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Board (PLDDB) will be introducing an automated dispenser in the Township market.

PLDDB Chief Executive Officer Saira Iftikhar promised that the milk on sale from the machine would be pure and economical.

The vending machine, developed locally for Rs600,000, is part of a project aimed at encouraging dairy farmers to become entrepreneurs in an automated supply chain in which milk is provided to end consumers in pure and hygienic condition without adulteration, she said.

Ms Iftikhar said that in the first phase, at least 2,000 litres of milk from Khizerabad farms (Sargodha) of the PLDDB will be sold at Rs75 per litre in sealed packets through the vending machine to be installed in Township market in the first week of May.

The milk, she said, labelled as A2 type will be more digestible and healthier. The project will be expanded later to 12 other points in the city with the hope of progressive dairy farmers joining in by that time taking it to other regions.
