KOHAT: The speakers at a function here on Tuesday demanded provision of adequate funds for technical training of deaf girls, and allocation of reserved seats for them so they could get to the the assemblies at later stages of their lives.

They were speaking at a function to declare first-ever annual examination results at the government middle school for deaf here.

The function was organised by the social welfare and women development department.

Project manager Tariq Khan, school principal Tariq Mehmood and chairman Karwan-i-Amal Saleem Altaf spoke on the occasion.

Tariq Khan gave a briefing on the functioning of the middle school for deaf and problems faced by it. He said the school was functioning with limited resources.

District social welfare officer Bilal Afridi told Dawn the deputy commissioner had recently provided them with a 54-seat bus for easy transportation of children to and from the school. He said they required funds for the industrial training of the special children, besides purchasing raw material and swings for them.

SHOT DEAD: Two persons killed their drug-addict brother-in-law in Naway Kalay area on Hangu Road on Tuesday.

The police said Naeem and Sadiq shot dead their brother-in-law Talah Mohammad when he came to their house. The culprits escaped the area. The body was taken to Liaquat Memorial Hospital for autopsy and then handed over to family.

POLICEMEN SENT TO LOCKUP: Head of Saddar circle police on Tuesday sent two policemen to quarter guard for beating up two transgender individuals following a dispute over arrest of their caretaker.

The policemen, during a routine patrol, questioned a rickshaw driver named Fayyaz for smoking hashish near the residence of transvestites in College Town.

Two transgender persons, who were embarking from the three-wheeler at that time, tried to stop his arrest which resulted in a scuffle between policemen and them. They were given a severe beating by the policemen. The injured were taken to Saddar police station along with the rickshaw driver. There the transgender persons called their colleagues who gathered there in large numbers and raised hue and cry. DSP Saddar Zahir Shah, however, settled the issue and sent two policemen, Asad and Zeeshan, to quarter guard.

ILLEGAL STRUCTURES RAZED: The district administration the other day started operation against illegal structures on the state-owned Katha Jhang area after the expiry of two deadlines given to the inhabitants.

The government has allocated Rs25 million under the uplift and beautification plan for removing houses and shops on the state land in Katha Jhang. The residents were first given seven days and then 24 hours to voluntarily remove their buildings, but to no avail.
