HYDERABAD, May 15: Hundreds of men, women and children stage violent protest in some parts of the city on Saturday against shortage of water. Residents of Tando Yousuf, Gujrati Paro and American Quarters blocked the main railway track near the railway station and pelted two trains with stones.

They raised slogans against HDA and WASA officials and kept the national rail link blocked for a considerable period.

As a result, arrival and departure of different trains were delayed at Hyderabad and Kotri railway stations.

Elected representatives of the union councils were among the protesters.

They said they had not been getting water for several days as there was no supply from water works of Wasa such as Paretabad and Hala Naka where desilting was going on to increase the storage capacity whereas filtration plant had also been proposed for setting up to provide filtered water to population of these areas.

The shortage of water has been caused by power breakdown at the Hala grid station, badly affecting water supply to Hala Naka, Paretabad, new and old filter plants.

HDA officials said electricity outage took place on Wednesday that badly disturbed the whole cycle of water supply which consumes a considerable time to reach the end users.

The power supply was restored on Thursday morning and then again it was suspended for some time.

People had not been getting water since Thursday.
