ISLAMABAD: A security guard was killed and another injured during an attempted robbery in Tarnol on Tuesday.
Police said four guards from a private security company collected Rs14 million from a bank located on G.T. Road. Two of the guards were near the company’s vehicle at the parking area while the others were bringing the cash out from the bank.
As soon as the cash arrived near the vehicle, the robbers appeared at the scene and held up the guards at gunpoint and asked them to hand them the bags. However, the two guards put up resistance, which resulted in a scuffle.
The robbers then opened fire at the guards, injuring both. One of the guards collapsed while the other attempted to escape with the money and was shot in the leg.
The robbers then escaped on a motorcycle. The injured were shifted to the hospital where Mohammad Safir Khan was pronounced dead. The other guard, Mohammad Asfar, was in a stable condition.
When contacted, Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Fayaz Shenwari told Dawn that the two guards acted bravely but two of their colleagues and bank guards remained silent spectators.
The exact number of the robbers could not be ascertained, he added.
