ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has said the time has come to start the process of appointing a caretaker prime minister for holding the upcoming general elections.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Mr Shah also asked the public to suggest names of people who could be appointed prime minister.

The opposition leader said he would make every effort to nominate an impartial and capable caretaker prime minister who would run the day-to-day affairs of the government efficiently besides ensuring free, fair and transparent general elections.

Talking to reporters last month, Mr Shah had expressed the hope that consultations with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for the appointment of a caretaker government would start in a week or so.

Under the Constitution, consultation between the prime minister and the opposition leader is required for the appointment of a caretaker government.
