SINGAPORE, May 11: Singapore has formally endorsed Pakistan’s proposal of signing a joint declaration with Asean on cooperation in combating terrorism. Singapore’s support for the proposal is reflected in a two-page joint statement issued on behalf of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after their formal talks here.

The talks covered all aspects of bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

“Singapore expressed support for Pakistan’s proposal to sign a joint declaration on cooperation in combating terrorism with Asean,” noted the joint statement that came a day after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on combating terrorism and other trans-national crimes.

The two prime ministers condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and reaffirmed their commitment to continue their cooperation in this regard.

The two countries resolved to further strengthen bilateral relations by enhancing closer economic, commercial, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation.

They also decided to enhance the level of consultations between the political leadership and other sections of society.

The two sides noted that there was a tremendous potential for growth of economic relations between the two countries and decided to encourage the private sector in each country to exploit the opportunities available in other.

“Singapore appreciated Pakistan’s desire and interest in obtaining full dialogue partner status in Asean and agreed to convey this to Asean members,” the statement said.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment ‘to conclude a high standard free trade agreement (FTA)’ as soon as possible. They also reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and belief in equality, respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs of others and peaceful settlement of disputes as the fundamental principles of friendly relations amongst states.

“The prime minister of Singapore noted with satisfaction recent moves towards confidence building between Pakistan and India and expressed the hope that the two countries would be able to resolve all issues, including the Kashmir dispute, peacefully,” notes the statement.

The two sides also discussed the need to foster regional cooperation in development and reiterated their commitment to promotion of dialogue and understanding under Asian Cooperation Dialogue and Asia-Middle East Dialogue.

Prime Minister Lee Loong has accepted Mr Aziz’s invitation to visit Pakistan.—QA
