LAHORE: The West Pakistan Governor, Mr Mohammad Musa, said here today [Feb 7] that the land reforms introduced nine years ago on Feb 7, 1959 not only put an end to the unjust hold and hegemony of a handful of feudal lords but also ushered in an era of economic equilibrium and political stability in the country. The Governor, who was broadcasting his speech from Radio Pakistan, on the commencement of the Land Reforms Week and marking the 9th anniversary, said that these reforms would constitute a glorious chapter of the history of Pakistan.

“These far-reaching, radical, revolutionary and constructive reforms,” he said, brought an inspiring message of happiness for the poor and toiling cultivators and at the same time provided a source of fertility for the vast and scattered pieces of land. These reforms occupied basic importance in the development of Pakistan’s agricultural economy, he said.

Mr Musa said: “It was a pity that in spite of realising their importance and necessity, the pre-revolutionary Governments utterly failed to introduce these reforms and our agricultural economy could not be freed from the grip of the out-dated feudal system.”
