Aqeel and Nomi in semifinal

Published May 7, 2005

ISLAMABAD, May 6: Top seed Aqeel Khan was too good for Inam Gul on Friday walloping him in straight sets to qualify for the semifinals of the National Clay Court tennis championship at Islamabad Club. In a one-sided match, Aqeel sent his opponent from Peshawar packing with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Second seed Nomi Qamar was equally ruthless in his 6-2, 6-0 win over Shahzad Khan as he too made the last four.

Also making that grade was Jalil Khan, younger brother of Aqeel, who dropped a set against Muhammad Shafiq but was able to score a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory. For Asim Shafik it was a stroll, his 6-1, 6-1 rout of Mehmood Khan sending him through to the semis.

In the doubles quarterfinals, Aqeel and Rasheed Malik outplayed Tanveer and Fahad 6-3, 6-0. But M. Shafiq and Nomi did not have to wield their rackets for their veteran opponents Hameedul Haq and Mushaf Zia did not turn up.

Mehmood Khan and Jalil Khan showed the duo of Pervez Khan and Ikramul Haq the door, scoring a 6-3, 6-4 win, while Asim Shafik and Shahzad Khan crushed Shahrukh and Munir Ashiq 6-1, 6-0, also booking their semifinal berths.

Meanwhile, Naumanul Haq advanced to the junior under-17 final after a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) victory that put him into a clash with Khurrum Nazir, a 6-2, 6-1 conqueror of Abid Ali.
