HYDERABAD, May 3: The irrigation department has reiterated that the rising water level is posing danger to embankments of the Manchhar Lake and said that 2,000 cusecs of water must be released daily into the River Indus. According to sources, this concern about the safety of the embankments was expressed by members of the committee constituted by the irrigation department to determine the quantum of water to be released from Manchhar into the Indus which met in Dadu on Tuesday.

However, the DCO of Dadu and the DCO of Jamshoro strongly opposed this proposal and said that the quantum of water to be released in the Indus river should not exceed 1,000 cusecs.

However, it was agreed that the release of water should not be delayed any further.

Sources said that the committee would submit its recommendations to the Sindh government on Wednesday.

The members of the committee, later visited the Manchhar Lake and inspected its embankments and also took stock of the water level. They also talked to the local people about the current position of the embankments and other related matters.

None of committee members could be reached for comments.
