SWABI: The district will get new nazim in the coming months as Awami National Party has awarded party ticket for PK-32, Swabi-II, to Ameer Rehman, the incumbent district nazim, for next general elections.

When contacted, Ameer Rehman, who is also ANP’s district president, said that the party candidate for the nazim’s slot would be finalised soon after the announcement of date for the next general elections.

There are total 84 members in the district assembly of which ANP has 35 members, PTI 28, JUI-F 13, three each of QWP and PML-N and one of Swabi Qaumi Mahaz and one independent member.

Soon after the local government elections in 2015, minus-PTI seven parties alliance, called Swabi Democratic Alliance, was established. It included ANP, JUI-F, JI, PPP, SQM, PML-N and QWP. It was in fact an anti-PTI alliance and the leaders had vowed that it would be kept for the next general elections.

In coalition, JUI-F’s Asar Khan was elected as convener of the district assembly and the party had got a major chunk of the development funds. Interaction with leaders of various political parties confirmed that SDA was still intact in the district assembly.

Meanwhile, ANP announced here on Tuesday that NA-13, Swabi-II, ticket had been awarded to Shah Nawaz Khan of Topi city.

PRO-RECTOR ASSUMES CHARGE: Prof Dr Jameelun Nabi on Tuesday assumed charge as pro-rector (academics) of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.

Earlier, Prof Javed Ahmed Chattha relinquished the charge and decided to move to the US.

He joined the GIK Institute in 2002 and had worked as dean of students affairs and dean of Faculty of Engineering Sciences, GIK Institute. He has published over 100 research papers, articles and preprints, majority of them in international journals.
