LAHORE: A student wing has allegedly manhandled a Punjab University teacher for stopping it from its ‘illegal’ activities on campus.
Assistant Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal of Department of Kashmiryat told Dawn on Thursday that some 10 to 15 activists of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba manhandled him at Hostel 15 on Tuesday for stopping them from placing portrait of their slain activist on hostel walls and also recovering outstanding (hostel) dues from them.
Dr Iqbal, who is vice president of the Academic Staff Association, said he had forewarned the administration about the plans of the JIT activists but no security was provided to him. He and other ASA members demanded sacking of the hall council chairman and taking stringent action against those involved in the crime and their expulsion from the varsity.
They also demanded ban on the IJT and calling in the Rangers in the varsity to take up the security matters.
A PU spokesman said an FIR had been lodged against the suspects and the varsity would not tolerate such incidents.
An IJT spokesman denied its members’ involvement in the incident.
