GUJRANWALA, Aug 27: Electioneering for Kamoki tehsil nazimship has gained a momentum as heavyweight politicians have jumped into election campaign for their candidates.

According to a survey, the Kamoki tehsil nazimship was left by Shamshad Ahmad, now the provincial transport minister, to contest the October general elections.

He got nominated his brother, Sajjad Ahmad, as PML-Q candidate by the chief minister and started his election campaign. His political rival Rana Nazir nominated Rana Mohammed Asif Darghapuri and PML-J chief Hamid Nasir Chattha, district Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha, chief minister’s adviser Dr Sohail Zafar Cheema and ex-MPA Zafarullah Cheema supported him. They held public meetings in support of Rana Asif.

Six candidates — Sajjad Ahmad, Rana Asif, Mohammed Naseer, Faisal Adnan, Qamaruz Zaman and Rana Asghar — are in the run for the slot of Kamoki tehsil Nazim, but the real fight is expected between Shamshad Ahmad and Rana Asif.

According to a report, PPP district president ex-MNA Abdullah Virk has announced support to Sajjad Ahmad. Both Rana Asif and Sajjad Ahmad belonged to the Jat biradari.

Meanwhile, the returning officer has allotted election symbols to all aspirants.

The Kamoki tehsil consists of 24 union councils where the number of councillors is 488 who will cast their votes for tehsil nazimship on Sept 8.

SHOT DEAD: A general councillor was shot dead allegedly by his rivals over an old enmity in Shahinabad here on Wednesday.

Habibullah was on his way home when Saghir along with accomplices opened fire on him. He died while being taken to hospital.

Police have registered a case against the accused and are investigating.
