ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday fined Gujranwala and Sukkur based distribution companies for extended periods of power cuts and failing to meet performance standards.

The two ex-Wapda distribution companies (Discos) were fined on many counts including failure to revive power supply in a timely manner, ensure stable voltage level and overloading of transformers besides misleading information.

In an announcement, Nepra said it imposed Rs4m fine on Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) and Rs6m on Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) under the Nepra Fine Rules for non-compliance of performance standards, distribution code and licence, Nepra Act and rules.

The companies were particularly found lacking to restore the power supply within prescribed time, failure to provide proper voltage level (poor quality of supply), failure to reduce the overloading of power transformers, failure to utilise the amounts/funds and failure to provide correct information regarding interruptions, duration of interruptions and number of complaints.
