Qatar to fund new Palestinian govt HQ in Gaza

GAZA CITY: Qatar announced on Tuesday it will fund a new headquarters for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza as it seeks to support a recently agreed reconciliation deal between rivals Hamas and Fatah.

“Qatar has agreed to build the headquarters of the presidency and the headquarters of the Palestinian government in Gaza after the consensus government assumes its duties fully,” Qatar’s envoy to Gaza Mohammed al-Amadi announced.

The Palestinian Authority government is to retake control of the Gaza Strip from Hamas by Dec 1 under a reconciliation deal signed in Cairo this month.

Amadi said Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas had asked the Gulf state a week ago for the funding and Qatar agreed as it wants to support reconciliation efforts.

The headquarters of the Palestinian Authority presidency and government in the Gaza Strip were targeted several times by Israeli bombing in 2008-09 and 2012 wars, leaving them destroyed.

Qatar has long been a supporter of Hamas and has paid for much of the reconstruction of the strip after the last war with Israel in 2014.

We salute Qatar government for its courageous steps to stand beside the Palestinian brothers. It will be a great step if Doha builds up the head quarter of Hamas and Fatah. Qatar's TV channel has become a mirror of Muslims world especially of the Palestinians and African Muslims. Qatar's young Emir perceived it correctly that a strong media is powerful than buying missiles from the power lords. Saudi Arabia and her follower Gulf state will understand soon that it is better to fight for keeping up the head instead of become servant of the foreign powers. Go ahead Qatar, a small country but big heart.

Palestinians would have solved their problem with Israel years back. It was "UMMA" which misguided them, made them refugees. Hope that with less oil money they will try to change like Saudi Arabia. (military ties with Israel, economic & social reforms)

Nasser thought to lead the Muslim World Egypt had to rescue the Palestinians. Hafez Assad thought to lead the Muslim World Syrian had to free the Palestinians. Qataris want to repair their image by funding the Palestine government. The Palestinians are pawns in the game.
