RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) on Friday authorised the elected members to solve the problems of traders and stall holders in the cantonment areas.

This was decided at a board meeting held at the RCB offices with Station Commander Brig Shahzad Tanveer in the chair.

RCB Cantonment Executive Officer Dr. Saima Shah, RCB Vice President Malik Munir and other elected members participated in the meeting.

The civic body approves creation of 15 posts for building inspectors

The Bazaar Committee comprising all 12 elected members led by Vice President Malik Munir was already in place but it had no authority to take decisions.

However, the station commander approved that the bazaar committee would be authorised to make decision for the solution of traders and stall holders’ problems.

The meeting also gave approval to creation of 15 new posts for building inspectors to check the unauthorised construction in the cantonment areas.

The RCB Cantonment Executive Officer Dr. Saima Shah said the RCB would appoint diploma holders or associate civil engineers as inspectors so that they could read the building maps.

A senior RCB official told Dawn that the civic body had recently suspended eight building inspectors, an engineer and draftsman of the building branch allegedly on corruption charges. They were non-technical as they were recruited as normal staff but they were given the charge of building inspectors on the recommendations of influential personalities in previous years.

He said that the RCB wanted to rectify the wrongdoings of the previous bureaucracy of the civic body. He said that the building inspectors should be filled through merit and with technical staff.

“During the meeting, the elected members had reservations on the creation of the building inspectors’ posts but the station commander gave approval and later, the elected members agreed,” he said.

The meeting also discussed out of order Q-Matic machine –Queue management system- installed at the RCB facilitation centre. The machine was installed three years ago at the facilitation centre where the visitors can get token for their turn but it went out of order soon it installed.

The meeting approved to install new machine or repair it as the people had to stand in queues at the facilitation centre for registration of death and birth certificates and submitting building plans.

The project worth Rs1.3 million had been approved for the beautification of the Chungi No.22. The RCB will install fountain, lights and flower beds in the area.

The meeting also gave approval to the purchase of medicines, equipments and installation of lift at Cantonment General Hospital.

The meeting also approved building plans and six cases of transfer of property in cantonment areas as well as repair and maintenance works in different areas.
