RAWALPINDI: A woman suffering from dengue died at the Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) on Wednesday though doctors say she had recovered from the virus three days ago and had died of multiple organ failure.

Ghazala Rafique, 42, was admitted to the BBH dengue ward when she was brought to the hospital last week.

BBH Medical Superintendent Dr Arshad Ali Sabir told Dawn the patient had dengue but she had recovered from the ailment on Sept 30 and had been moved to the medical ward.

He said the patient also had diabetes, hypertension and typhoid and that doctors had also been treating these illnesses.

“She died of multiple organ failure due to her other illenesses,” Dr Sabir said.

He said there were 18 patients in the dengue ward at BBH and that nine of these were confirmed dengue patients.

He said there are fewer dengue patients this year compared to last year.

He said no dengue patient had died in the hospital this year.

A total of 75 dengue patients from the garrison city have reported to the three government-run hospitals including BBH, District Headquarters Hospital and Holy Family Hospital.

Many of the patients from Potohar Town are from Rehmatabad and the Punjab Minister for Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Raffique visited the area and asked the health authorities to ensure an anti-dengue campaign is conducted in the area.

The two main reasons for the decreased number of patients this year is that the anti-dengue campaign was launched in March this year and the virus did not spread as much, said a senior doctor.

He said the second reason was that many patients also go to private medical facilities on which there are no statistics.
