DHA: Clifton beach

Published September 22, 2017

THIS is apropos the letter ‘Clifton beach’ (Aug 30) in which the writer has lamented that 57 years ago he had written in these columns pointing out the unkempt and filthy conditions of the Clifton beach where rampant commercial activity was also the order of the day.

I appreciate the empathy for Clifton beach shown by the writer. Nevertheless, he has put the blame on the door of the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC).

The truth is that DHA Karachi has played a bigger role in making it uglier and clumsies by constructing numerous kiosks/other structures for commercial purposes and high walls, thus obstructing the clear view of the sea.

The epidemic of eateries sprung up in Do Darya area which generated a huge revenue for the DHA but it has now been brought right up to Seaview road which invariably creates traffic gridlock.

The DHA authorities should have a look at severe traffic jams at night caused owing to two or three eateries which have been permitted recently to do business.

The DHA should not commercialise every nook and cranny of its area. It should give the citizens some breathing space.

Clearly, something has changed since for this step to have been taken and there are shifts in the balance of power within.
