SIALKOT: A woman was killed and three people were injured on Thursday when Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling on villages along the Sialkot Working Boundary.

According to officials, the BSF continued shelling for the second consecutive day on villages in Phookaliyaan-Bajwat sector, hitting houses in villages Kaahliyaan and Kakraan. An old woman died and three people were wounded.

The deceased was identified as Raishma Bibi, 60, a resident of Kaahliyaan. Ameer Aslam and Safreen Bibi were injured in Kaahliyaan and Ghulam Abbas in Kakraan.

Rescue 1122 workers took Ameer Aslam to the Combined Military Hospital in Sialkot in critical condition.

Several head of cattle were also killed or injured in the shelling in villages Diyaarwali, Kaliyaal, Kaahli­yaan, Phookaliyaan and Kakraan. Several houses and cattle sheds were damaged in these villages.

The officials said the BSF fired shells on villages Phookaliyaan, Kaahliyaan, Diyaarwali, Kotli Dil Patiyaan, Saddarpura, Gangwaal, Kaliyaal, Kachhi Maand, Looni, Kheri, Tiba, Pul Bajwaan, Beli, Gaddiyaal, Gidhpur, Kakraan, Kukwaal, Papeen and Khanu Baaen and their surrounding areas.

They said Punjab Rangers responded instantly and effectively, silencing the Indian guns.

Numerous shells landed in fields, but did not explode.

On Wednesday, a Pakistani man Zahur Elahi was killed in Indian shelling on Diyaarwali-Kaliyaal village.
