KARACHI: An inquest into the death of an 82-year-old man whose family claimed that he had committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of a building revealed on Wednesday that he had been murdered allegedly by his son.

The body of Rasheed Ahmed was exhumed from the Yasinabad graveyard in the presence of a judicial magistrate and a team of doctors which confirmed that he had been strangled to death.

According to his family, he had committed ‘suicide’ by jumping from the apartment in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on June 25 but a post-mortem examination of the body confirmed that he had been throttled to death before his body had been thrown from the flat.

Additional police surgeon of Civil Hospital Karachi Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi, who was a member of the team of doctors, told Dawn that “multiple injuries” were caused to his body after his killing.

Police investigators were of the opinion that the motive for the killing could be a dispute over property worth Rs20 million to Rs25m.

The investigation into the death of the octogenarian began after his US-based son, Nasir, had arrived here and lodged an FIR at the Aziz Bhatti police station. He alleged that his brother, Imtiaz, had killed their father over some property dispute.

Aziz Bhatti SHO Sadruddin Mirani told Dawn that as per initial investigation Imtiaz had a property dispute over some shops worth between Rs20m and Rs25m with his father, Rasheed. The suspect along with his son, Suner, had allegedly killed his father. Both the suspects were later arrested.
