PESHAWAR, Aug 18: The services of a station house officer, investigation, have been terminated on charges of taking a bribe from an accused, who had allegedly snatched money from a trader five months ago.

Sources told Dawn on Monday that Rasheed, owner of Rehman Traders was deprived of Rs655,000 cash in the Kali Bari area of the Cantonment by unidentified robbers after injuring him on March 27, 2003. The West-Cant police had registered an FIR and started investigation.

The SHO, investigation, of the West-Cant police station, Shahinshah Khan, had traced one of the robbers namely Jameel, son of Ameer Khan, a resident of Pir Bala. The accused had subsequently been arrested.

During the interrogation, Jameel had confessed to the crime and SHO Shahinshah Khan had recovered Rs200,000 from a place specified by the accused, sources maintained.

However, the SHO struck a ‘deal’ with the accused and did not show the amount in government files. Shahinshah Khan, later on, freed Jameel under Section of 169 PPC, which proved him to be innocent.

Somehow, chief of the Capital City Police Tanvirul Haq Sipra came to know about the alleged ‘deal’. He immediately formed a committee, headed by ASP Waqas Nazir, and served a show-cause notice on the SHO, accusing him of receiving Rs40,000 in bribes.

The SHO failed to reply to the show-cause satisfactorily and the ASP proved him to be guilty of corruption in his report that was subsequently submitted to the CCP chief, sources maintained.

The CCP chief had taken action a few days ago, terminating the services of the SHO.
