SWABI, Aug 16: Illiteracy and unemployment are two main reasons why young people fall prey to drug addiction.

This was stated by speakers at a seminar entitled “Peace and child drug addiction” organized here on Saturday.

Citing a survey report, a speaker said that out of 4 million drug addicts in the region, 2 million happened to be heroin addicts.

The main reasons for drug addiction were poverty, lack of treatment facilities for patients, illiteracy and the government’s failure to put an end to the supply of drugs, he said.

Another speaker said that drug addiction was on the rise in the district and to counter that proper planning was required.

According to him, 12 per cent people among criminals were drug addicts.

He urged upon the CBOs to play their role in protecting the younger generation from drug addiction. —Correspondent
