Fahad, Fatima clinch titles

KARACHI: Fahad Khawaja became new junior boys champion while Fatima Khan successfully retained junior girls crown as the curtain fell on the Panasonic 24th Junior and Cadet National Table Tennis Championships at the Islamia Club on Sunday.

Fahad did Army proud when he chalked up 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 victory over team-mate Obaid Shah in the keenly contested final.

Fatima of Chromatex Chemicals, lived up to her top billing by getting the better of Sindh’s Hareem Anwer straight 11-9, 11-4, 11-9 to annex the girls crown.

Chromatex earned the lion’s share of four golds and was followed by Army three. The National Highway Authority secured two golds while hosts Sindh earned one of the 20 gold medals that were at the stake in the event organised by the Karachi Table Tennis Association (KTTA).

Ejaz Ali Shah, Chief Executive Officer Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Ltd, who graced the finals, gave away the prizes. President of the Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) S M. Sibtain, president of the KTTA Mohammad Tahir Loan and president of the Sindh Table Tennis Association (STTA) Azher Khurshid were among others who were also also present.

Al-Hamza stun Northern to enter final

KARACHI: Spinners Mirza Ahsan Jamil and Moazzam Malik shared six wickets between them as Al- Hamza CC stormed into the final of the Anza Cup T20 cricket tournament with a stunning six-wicket defeat of Northern Gymkhana here on Saturday.

Northern Gymkhana, batting first at the Nazeer Hussain Gymkhana Gulberg Ground, were restricted to 151-8. Opener Fazal Subhan struck 58. Slow left-arm chinaman bowler Ahsan grabbed three wickets for 36 runs while leg-spinner Moazzam took 3-20.

Al-Hamza CC reached their target of 152 in 14.5 overs. Shahzar Hasan hit 65 while Mohammad Ali contributed 57.

Shahida elected PWAA president

KARACHI: Shahida Khannum has been elected as president while Abida Tanveer has been elected secretary of Pakistan Women Athletics Association (PWAA) during the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) General Council Meeting at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad on Sunday.

Humaira Mahmood has been elected as Senior Vice President while Shahina Ishtiaq has been elected as Treasurer.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of AFP chief Mohammad Akram Sahi. The house also elected Athletes Commission, comprising Liaqat Ali, Mohsin Ali, Rabia Ashiq and Maria Maratab.—PPI

Women’s football event from 25th

ISLAMABAD: The No Smoking Women Football Tournament will kick off from August 25 here at the H-8 Ground.

Organising Committee chairman Haji Ghiasuddin Baloch said that four teams will take part in the tournament including Pakistan Army, former national champion Young Rising Star Club Rawalpindi, Islamabad and NFA Academy Islamabad.

The opening match of the tournament will be played between Army and NFA Academy.—APP

PTF inaugurates grass courts

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) president Salim Saifullah Khan on Sunday inaugurated the renovated grass courts here at the Pakistan Sports Complex.

Salim played some points with Pakistan No. 1 Aqeel Khan, who is in preparing for the upcoming Davis Cup tie in September.

Pakistan face Thailand in September in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II final with the winner set to earn promotion to the top tier.—PPI

Peshawar Whites stun Upper Dir

PESHAWAR: Peshawar Whites upset Upper Dir in a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inter-District Football Championship here at the Sumbal Khan Football Ground on Sunday.

After a goalless draw, the match went to spotkicks and after there was nothing to separate them after the first 10 penalties, it went to sudden death where Peshawar Whites eventually won 8-7.—APP
