DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Maulana Syed Attaullah Shah, a senior leader of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and said to be the spiritual mentor of party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, was gunned down here on Saturday.

Sources said that Maulana Shah, 65, was returning home after offering Fajr prayers at the Siddique Akbar Mosque when men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. He received a single bullet in his head and died.

The body was brought to a local hospital where the post-mortem was carried out.

Maulana Shah was buried in his ancestral village of Penyala. A large number of people attended the funeral prayers.

Police have registered a case against unidentified assailants.

Maulana Shah had served as the principal of Jamia Maarif Al Sharia located at the residence of the JUI-F chief in Abdul Khel.

Party sources said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had received spiritual guidance from Maulana Shah.
