ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Thursday directed Rawalpindi district Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani to improve facilities and delivery of services to the people of the district.

He said this while talking to the district Nazim, who had called on him at his secretariat to discuss matters pertaining to provision of civic facilities to the citizens of Rawalpindi.

Mr Jamali said Rawalpindi district was particularly important because of being located in the neighbourhood of the federal capital. He said people of Rawalpindi deserved a better deal.

Reiterating federal government’s commitment and support towards the local governance system, the prime minister said: “The government is striving to strengthen the district governments for locally solving the problems of people.”

He said the local government system was expected to deliver the goods and bring about a real change at the grass-root level.

He was briefed about the progress of various ongoing development projects in the district.

Mr Kiani, the officials said, told the prime minister about the efforts being made by the district government in fields of electrification, water supply, construction of roads, bridges and underpasses.

They quoted the Nazim as having told the prime minister that a special package had been prepared to provide electricity to the villages located within 5kms radius of the oil and gas fields of the district.

During the meeting, Mr Kiani said priority was being accorded to provision of electricity to the areas of Kahuta and Kotli Sattian, which were still without electricity.
