MUZAFFARABAD: A woman was killed and another injured as Indian troops shelled the civilian population in Nakyal and Khuiratta sectors of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday “without any provocation”.
“The Indian army resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control in Khuiratta and Karela (Nakyal) sectors, targeting innocent people,” an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.
“One woman embraced shahadat in Karela sector, while one woman was injured in Khuiratta sector,” the ISPR added. Both sectors are in Kotli district.
Kotli Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chaudhry Zulqarnain Sarfraz said 45-year-old Muneer Begum was cutting fodder near the unmarked dividing line in her Sloor Tarkundi village when she fell victim to the Indian army’s firing with “short-range weapons” at about 11.30am.
“Indian troops did not stop firing and as a result villagers were unable to remove her body from the front of their post for quite some time,” he added.
The SSP said Musarrat Bibi was injured in the Charhoi area.
The ISPR said that the Pakistan Army responded “effectively and targeted Indian posts which had initiated unprovoked firing”.
On July 31, a 13-year-old girl was injured in a similar incident in Khuiratta sector.
Prior to that, a young boy was killed and three members of his family injured in the Leepa Valley on July 21.
AFP adds: Indian security forces on Monday claimed to have killed five militants attempting to cross over into India-held Kashmir.
