Ex-SECP chairman Zafar Hijazi sent to Adiala jail on 14-day remand

A local court in Islamabad sent the former Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chairman Zafar Hijazi on a 14-day judicial remand to Adiala Jail on Saturday.

Hijazi was taken into FIA custody earlier this month after a report released by the joint investigation team, probing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family's wealth, alleged that the former SECP chairman had altered records related to Chaudhry Sugar Mills.

Hijazi was presented before the Senior Civil Judge Muhammad Shabbir after his three-day physical remand with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) ended. The FIA requested the court for a further three-day physical remand which was contested by Hijazi's counsel, Azid Nafees, who argued that his counsel had already been in FIA custody for seven days.

Rejecting FIA's request, the court sent Hijazi to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

A case was registered against Hijazi on the orders of the Supreme Court after the three-member Panama Papers case implementation bench acted on the JIT report.

The first information report against the former SECP chairman was registered under Sections 466 (forgery) and 471 (using forged documents as genuine) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), read with Section 5(2)(47) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, at FIA's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Islamabad.

How pathetic! He tempered official records and favored PM Nawaz to benefit him in Panama investigations but the poor Hijazi former Chairman, SECP is now in jail where none from PML (N) came to meet him. I doubt even if anybody has phoned him since his arrest a few days back. He deserves full support from Nawaz in cash and kind but perhaps he is completely neglected as if he is an alien for Nawaz which is pinching and piercing me at least if not you which I very much regret to be honest. I have no problem with this. But this guy is not the owner of the Sugar Mills whose records were tampered. He is a government functionary. Obviously he did, what he did to please his masters and may have received some petty reward for it. That would come under corruption. But what about the owner of the Sugar Mills. Whatever wrongdoing that the record tampering was done to hide was done by the Sugar Mills owner - why are they outside? Will the CJ SC take Suo Motu action on this?

Putting SECP chairman behind bars should open up eyes of others institution heads like, NAB, FBR, FIA. If they give undue favour to PMLN or any other sitting govt , they would be met with same fate. Its the beginning of new and better era for PAKISTAN inshAllah. The credit goes to IK, JIT and most of all to SC of Pakistan.

Present court decision would be considered selective accountability until and unless all other corrupts including Zardari, IK and mush are scrutinised against the same criteria. Selective accountability started in 1958 and repeated every ten years without delivering any good.

All corrupt and cheaters should be sent to prison and given the exemplary punishment to make this country corruption free. Sending Hijazi in jail is not enough as he tried to hide the facts by tampering record not only from the people of Pakistan but also tried to misguide the apex court.

While going through the comments of some of my optimistic friends why do I feel that I had read these too in 1999 when NAB nabbed Sharifs, Cahudries, Sherpaos, Bhuttos, Wattos etc etc. If nothing happened then, then how can I believe that this time it is not the selective justice, I will surely if SC from now on makes the similar kind of JITs and start overseeing the NAB accountability for all cases awaiting trials.

Kudos to the local court for sending this criminal to Adiala jail on 14-day remand since he committed a big crime by unlawfully altering and changing the records under his command and control as Securities and Exchange Commission (SECP) chairman pertaining to Chaudhry Sugar Mills, owned by the ex corrupt Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. For sure, many more similar cases will come to the fore in the days to follow.
