KOHAT: The dispute resolution council has solved about 1,000 serious and minor cases out of court through jirga since its inception here in 2014, said district police officer Javed Iqbal addressing a meeting of the DRC members and police officials here on Tuesday.

He stated that the system was duly protected by law and all the DRC decisions were acceptable in the courts. It had been re-established by providing grace to the old jirga practice where all disputes were settled by elders in a peaceful manner.

He asserted that the jirga still played an important role in the society and the DRC had curbed the illegal practice of taking the disputes by people to the powerful criminals for solution on payment.

Speaking on the occasion, Amad Azam advocate, Ghayasuddin and Shahid Zaman highlighted the role of DRC in resolving local issues. It was attended by prosecution officer Ishaq Gul, Kohat bar association president Javed Panji and all other members.

Mr Iqbal asked the DSPs and SHOs for transparent and quick investigations of the cases and sending them to DRC for settlement of issues. He said that hundreds of cases had been resolved before leading to bloodshed, decreasing burden on the police stations and courts.

CONDOLENCE: Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra visited the residence of PML-N central leader Malik Asad Khan in Kohat on Tuesday to offer condolences over the sad demise of his maternal uncle retired Col Dr Sahibzada Sadiq Noor.

The deceased was the paternal uncle of ex-chief secretary KP Sahibzada Riaz Noor.

The governor remained there for some time and offered ‘fateha’ for the departed soul. He prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.
