HYDERABAD, Aug 10: The recent rains claimed lives of 168 people, affected 3,422 villages and destroyed 3,43,188 acres of cropped area across the province, said figures of the Sindh Relief Commission on here Saturday. Those lost lives included 134 bread-earners.
The figures said at least 249 people were injured. It said 859,917 people were affected during the rains and floods.
A total 142,466 houses were damaged. At least 9,336 cattle heads perished during the rains.
DONATIONS: The relief commissioner, Sindh, authorized Syed Mehdi Ali Shah, Survey Superintendent, Karachi, to receive the donations of relief goods meant for flood affected people.

SICK ANIMALS: More than 150 animals were killed and thousands injured during the recent rains in Dadu district.
This was stated by the district officer, livestock Dadu, Dr Allah Bux Panhwar, while visiting veterinary camps established in Dadu, Sehwan Sharif, Kolri, Johi and Thano Bola Khan on Saturday.
Dr Panhwar said the animal husbandry department was working round-the-clock to look after and protect the animals in rain effected areas.
He said the department had launched a campaign to protect the livestock from the expected epidemic diseases and treat the animals of said areas.
He exhorted the vets to continue efforts to prevent the livestock from contagious diseases.
On the occasion, veterinary officer Dr Syed Ghulam Mujtaba Sahah, mobile officer, Dr Kabeer Ahmed, Dr Abdul Hameed Lashari and Dr Abdullah Jamali briefed the district officer that 5,000 animals were treated by vaccine and provided drugs and medicines.
SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS: The silver jubilee celebrations of Bertram D’Souza as principal of St Bonaventure’s Boys High School were held here on Saturday.
The function was held at the Qasimabad branch of the school.
The director, Catholic Board of Education, Father Anju, gave a gold medal to Mr Bertram.
Bishop Max Rodriguez also spoke on the occasion, lauding the services of the principal at a simple but impressive cer-emony.
