PESHAWAR, Aug 9: An exhibition displaying textile designs made by fine arts students was held here on Saturday.

The exhibition was organized by the Institute of Fine Arts. Some 35 students of fine arts turned the small and old building of the institute into a colourful place by decorating its rooms and corridors with artistic articles.

Students displayed their designs in glasswork, sheetwork, batik, block and jar painting. Colourful bed sheets, printed shirts for girls, cushions in applied carpet designs as well as traditional, creative and experimental designs were put on display.

Hinnah Jamil, who twice secured first position in the University of  Peshawar examinations, displayed chunneri, glass paintings, bed sheets and floral shirts for girls.

Another student, Abdur Rahim exhibited block printing, textile designs and ajrak.

The institute has tremendous academic record but due to lack of government support the talent of students could not be properly exposed.

“There is no art gallery in the city where the talent of such students could be displayed,” Shabana Orakzai, a teacher said.

“The only textile designing institute in the NWFP is faced with some problems and despite having a strength of 75 regular students and 20 diploma seekers, the six-room building cannot accommodate many students”, Sajjad Orakzai, director of the institute said.

He said last year former provincial education minister, Imtiaz Hussain Gillani had promised that a piece of land would be provided for construction of another building of the institute but authorities concerned failed to keep the promise.
