LAHORE: A man detained in the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Civil Lines lockup was found dead on Friday. Authorities said deceased Faisal had committed suicide by hanging himself with a hook in the ceiling and used a scarf for the purpose.

Police said CIA Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Khalid arrested late on Wednesday the suspect for his involvement in robberies and during preliminary investigation, Faisal had confessed to committing 12 robberies.

The investigator handed over the suspect to a constable and went to offer Friday prayers.

Police said the constable removed the handcuffs of the suspect when he sought permission to offer prayers.

After a while, the constable found the suspect hanging with the ceiling while the door of the investigation room was locked from inside. The constable alerted the police high-ups who started investigation.

Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy.

However, victim’s family alleged that Faisal had died due to torture and demanded action against policemen.

CIA Superintendent of Police Tariq Mastoi told Dawn that the suspect was involved in a number of robbery cases and was being interrogated when he committed suicide.

He said they had suspended the investigator and the constable for negligence and also registered a case against them.

The SP said they did not find any marks of torture on the body and postmortem report would further ascertain the facts.
