KARACHI: Two senior police officers allegedly involved in a Rs50 million corruption case escaped from the Sindh High Court after an interim pre-arrest bail granted to them was revoked by a two-judge bench.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M. Sheikh also rejected applications of Assistant Inspector General (fina­nce) Fida Hussain and AIG (logistics) Tanvir Ahmed Tahir for entering into a plea bargain deal with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The police officers’ counsel informed the court that their clients had struck the deal with NAB which had named the two officers in a corruption reference.

The court was informed that AIG Fida Hussain was willing to deposit Rs20 million in the national exchequer.

Expressing dismay over the deal between the accused and NAB, the chief justice said the two police officers were still holding their offices despite committing corrupt practices.

The bench rejected the police officers’ applications for entering into the plea bargain deal with NAB and also ordered the cancellation of interim pre-arrest bail earlier granted to them.

The two police officers, who are superintendents of police (SPs) by designation, however, fled immediately after the cancellation of their interim bail.

AIG Tanveer Ahmed and AIG Fida Hussain have been accused of embezzling Rs50m of funds released to pay fuel charges and make special security arrangements for Muharram.
