KARACHI: The Sindh police’s Counter-Terrorism Department has formed a team to probe into incidence of cheating during ongoing intermediate examinations, particularly the alleged use of Indian subscriber identity modules (SIMs) through a WhatsApp group, DIG CTD Amir Farooq said on Saturday.

Speaking to Dawn, the senior officer of the counterterrorism force said that taking notice of cheating in examinations, the Sindh chief minister had directed AIG of CTD Dr Sanaullah Abbasi to look into the matter.

Subsequently, the team led by SSP CTD Naveed Ahmed Nisar Khowaja had been formed for this purpose.

Mr Farooqi said there were reports that a WhatsApp group and Indian SIMs were being used for unfair practices in the examinations.

The CTD had been tasked with finding out from where this WhatsApp group was being operated and take them to task with help of the Federal Investigation Agency’s cybercrime wing.

The officer said there must be local people who were using Indian SIMs, which would be blocked.

The CTD DIG said that it was a ‘scary development’ that Indian SIMs were being used.

Besides, it was also worrying to note that mobile phones were allowed during examinations, he added.

Meanwhile, AIG CTD Dr Sanaullah Abbasi said that SSP Khowaja, who was probing the matter, held a meeting with Education Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar in this connection on Saturday.

Mr Abbasi vowed that elements involved in cheating would be arrested.
