KARACHI, Oct 13: Since people with diabetes are at high risk of foot complications, a major cause of morbidity, diabetologists have stressed the need for educating diabetics on foot care as an important aspect of treatment.

According to experts, the high risk subjects for foot lesions are diabetics with peripheral neuropathy, as when the nerve function is lost, the foot suffers change in form and function.

The condition may cause easy ulceration due to lack of sensation and severe deformity and end up in amputation”, they warn, adding that obesity and use of tobacco are also important factors responsible for impeded blood flow.

Wrong type of footwear is also cited as a major cause for foot complications. Diabetics are warned that most fashionable and expensive shoes may often be the cause of utmost damage. They should ensure proper foot-care with on daily inspection of the feet, washing with a good mild soap followed by drying and application of a lotion. Shoes should broad-toed and high heels should be avoided.—PPI
