KARACHI: The Gymkhana race meeting that was slated to take place at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday has been cancelled for want of competition, a spokesman for the Karachi Race Club (KRC) said on Thursday.

“The races have been cancelled due to viral infection that has effected almost 90 percent racing horses in the stables,” secretary of the KRC Syed Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi told Dawn.

He said first the disease was spread among the horses at the Lahore Racecourse and then a number of horses fell sick at the city’s Malir Cantt polo club before it spread at the KRC. Vets are attending the horses.

The secretary added that besides April 30 meeting, it may not be possible to hold Gymkhana race meeting on May seven also.
