KARACHI: A suspected militant was killed and four Rangers personnel were injured in an encounter in the Urdu Bazaar area here on Monday night, officials said.

According to them, Rangers raided an apartment building on Muqaddas Street after receiving information about the presence there of suspected militants belonging to a banned outfit.

The militants hurled two grenades and started firing as soon as they saw Rangers, said a spokesperson for the paramilitary force. Four Rangers personnel and two passers-by suffered injuries in the explosions.

He said a heavy contingent of Rangers cordoned off the area and during a search operation one militant was taken into custody from the building, adding that the second militant was killed in the encounter.

Additional Police Surgeon Dr Qarar Abbasi said that none of the four Rangers personnel — Salman, 30; Amanullah, 28; Waheed, 25; and Asif Ali, 40 — and the passers-by sustained life-threatening wounds.
