McKinsey hired to help improve tax collection

LAHORE: The Austra­lian High Commission, Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) and McKinsey & Company signed on Monday a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a diagnostic assessment of the authority to suggest a reforms process for improving the tax administration.

The MoU was signed in a ceremony at the PRA headquarters in the presence of Punjab Finance Minister Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha.

According to Shehzad Mehmood Gondal, a spokesman for the PRA, the scope of the MoU is to run a diagnostic review of the PRA and suggest ways and means to improve tax revenues to the tune of Rs150 billion in the next three years from Rs61.6bn for 2015-16.

The company engaged for this assignment, McKinsey & Company, is a renowned management consultancy firm, he said.

It is good to read that Punjab is seeking help from companies like McKinzee and is keen to grow its tax collection and to improve tax management. this is the only way to go ahead. Australian tax system is also one of the best ones in the world (less stringent than the UK and the US but reasonably strict to get proper taxes). Immense political determination is required to make the rich pay taxes in Pakistan.

Get in a clean and competent and incorruptible government in place and tax collection will exceed target. There is a reason why Pakistan ranks as top 4 country in the world in charity donations and ranks much below in tax collection...the reason is people don't trust government...simple as that. So wait for the verdict.
