PIA air hostess arrested in Paris for shoplifting

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air hostess was arrested on Monday night in Paris for shoplifting at a shopping centre, PIA sources told DawnNews.

The air hostess, Afshan Khalid, was spotted by CCTV cameras as she stole items, prompting the shopping centre's security personnel to apprehend her and hand her over to the police, said a source in the national airline.

Khalid was detained by French authorities for five hours and released after PIA's station manager in Paris posted her bail, PIA sources said.

PIA management has taken notice of the incident and have ordered a full investigation into the matter, Yaqoob PIA's general manager flight services, told DawnNews.

Yaqoob added that the air hostess will be barred from flying on any international flight for a duration of six months.

"Once the investigation is complete, strict action will be taken against Afshan Khalid," he added.

The effect of the society in which the growth has happened. It should serve the the notice to the world that we have been brought up in corrupt and mingled with inaccuracies . This is common happening with Pakistani crew, every other day you hear similar stories of shop lifting, drug or gold smuggling by PIA crew.

Simply disgraceful. A similar event took place here in toronto a few months back when a PIA airhostess was caught shoplifting. We overseas pakistans try to make a positive image of our country and then there are ppl like these who want to destroy it. i would request that if she is proven guilty, she should be fired immideately

Good one PIA! Perhaps the background of all employees should be screened, before they become an embarrassment to the entire nation. On the other hand, the corruption and greed that permeates the society, makes many do a lot of nefarious things to keep up with the friends, neighbors and co-workers, through illicit means for bling-bling, that fancy iPhone or purse!! The ethical and moral deficit along with budget deficits and near bankruptcy of the nation and the national carrier. What an irony!?

So, if she is arrested, prosecuted, fined or jailed by the French police for her alleged crime, will PIA fire her? Or will PIA conduct an 'investigation' of its own? Perhaps set up a committee of 6-10 people, who will be flown to Paris for free, stay at a luxury hotel, just so they can say they were doing official investigation - at the expense of a few million more? What an insult to our intelligence. IF she's charged, tried and convicted, it clearly would mean she is a criminal. What is there to investigate??

The fault is not lying with the crew for being caught in shoplifting as she is forced to adopt the habit in which she must have been brought up. This is simply the effect of the society in which we are living . when our role models are thugs , we will aspire to be same and will tempt somewhere in the corner to grab something that is legally illegal.

@MAHMOOD what background screening when a large number of PIA employees are hired because of nepotism? You have no idea how politicized the organization is. Refusing to fill a said number of vacancies gets you threats from political parties and sometimes from party heads themselves. That is the level of corruption in this country.

95% of staff in PIA is hired on the basis of who they know rather than what they have studied and what sort of character they possess. This woman has brought shame to the whole nation and the only punishment she gets is 6 months of not flying international flights?. I personally have a horrible experience with PIA air hostess while I was in Shanghai, China, not one but 3 PIA hostesses behavior was so bad in front of Chinese officer, I got so embarrassed, and these ladies had no shame at all and walking away like nothing happened, no apology, no excuse, no sorry. People all around was looking at them and shocked.

my cousin told me about another PIA air hostess a year or two back that was caught shoplifting in a Primark Store in London. My cousin worked there and asked her why she did it, her response was only that it was a mistake. No actual acknowledgment that she did anything wrong, not in keeping with her job. Anyone else in a job acting like this would be fired.

Just playing a devils advocate here for the air-hostess is question.Once I am a witness to a $ 3 shoplifting by a visiting Indian in a big mall in LA.It was not a shop lifting as the gentleman and his wife has done a $ 800 shopping and unintentionally hanged the slippers on the trolley side to check for the size from the support staff and forget. After paying they were walking out the exit buzzer starred ringing and there you go the couple were branded a shop-lifter and the skin color was another evidence for their deed. Do you really believe a guy will shop lift $ 3 slippers when he is shopping $ 800/-.Just do not jump to a decision.A new person not used to the mall & western environment can make benign errors like this. It is possible the lady is innocent.

I don't think it is true.I live in U.S. When you buy in a store, you should keep your stuff in a cart. Not in your pocket or a purse if it is small or if you do not have a cart. Many people who visit these western countries from Asian countries do not know this fact. All customers are watched by security people. Even though it could have happened out of ignorance or a genuine oversight, it is perceived as if your intention was to steal it. It happens not infrequently. It has happened to many actors, actresses and cricketers from India in past. Also sometimes they want to embarrass you because of your skin color.

PIA should ask the French authorities to produce her before the court asap and let it decide if she is guilty and what should be the sentence. In today's day and age when the whole world more or less is covered by cameras and other forms of surveillance for Afshan to have indulged in shoplifting is the height of stupidity and shows the quality of personnel employed by and being employed by the powers that be in PIA and other governmental organization. Afshan should be jailed and then booted out of the PIA and also permanently barred from any government service. @Indian Almost all of us cheat on our taxes; some cheat on sales tax; some shop-lift; some kill for money; and then there's bribery; not to mention under-ground economy; and so on and so forth. @UD Totally agree with you. I have lived in Canada for over 40 years and I still tend to do something like putting a very small item (like a pack of shaving blades) in my pocket. When I empty my pockets at the cash counter, you should see the looks I get. Thank God I have never been accused of stealing; but an oversight can make that happen.

PIA used to be premiere airline in 1960s and early 70s and it had strict hiring and training standards. It was an honor to work for PIA and employees in designer uniforms were well respected around the world and they represented Pakistan well. At that time Pakistan was also well respected country and Pakistanis were considered hardworking, intelligent and honest. Since than lot has changed and in my opinion PIA and its employees are representing Pakistan the way it is today. In no way I am saying all PIA employees are dishonest or whole Pakistan is bad but there are significant of them which make Pakistan and PIA look bad.

I have seen so many cases during my days of people shoplifting. It is mostly related to the immigrants or visitors of the third world to first country.which in my view is poverty related and wanting to be better or successful looking or in immigrant cases want to blend in quickly in the immigrant and larger community. The locals in their countries also shoplift including some super rich spouses.

@Bajwa - There are plenty Pakistanis abound who earn no livelyhood at all, yet they do not resort to stealing. On the flip side of the coin, I know of people with middle class backgrounds to the uber rich who have been caught shoplifting, not because they could not afford the items, it's because they do not want to pay for something they inherently believe is their right.... sound familiar?

CCTV footage should be enough, it cannot get any clearer than that, as far as her employment, she should be barred from working for any government office or business for life, 6 months for getting caught stealing? Well done, no wonder PIA is a failed enterprise. People have no fear of losing their jobs, even when they are caught stealing, must be the good examples set by our leaders.

This is unfortunate but a basic human instint is at play here. But the most devastating and embaressing for the accused is that Her name is openly published in the media reports causing herself and her family members unimaginable embaressment and public scrutiny. Of course Pakistan shall take discplinary action but openly revealing her identity is gross injustice and.In fact she must get a chance to repent and rectify her misdemeanour.

Not surprising at all. This is what happens when lucrative jobs are distributed based on connections rather than merit. People started believing that "connection" rather than merit & behaviour earned them the job and that is going to be key in future growth. Unfortunately this epidemic has seeped into the society and existing social and political setup supports it

feel sorry for her. everybody shoplifts in western countries.its difficult to resist temptation of stores having rows of items without any shop attendants nearby. and how much are the politicians funneling away from public funds? thats much much worse. also, in many western countries, once you commit a crime, even if its a small one, it will be on your police certificate for 10 years !! it will become very difficult to get employment after that.

This is what you see around yourself and adopt as this is not a crime in Pakistan as everyone is involved in the same practice without any fear or the consequences. Few months back air hostess was caught in Toronto for shop lifting and put behind bars.

It is pity. CEO of PIA Bernd Hildenbrand is under investigation in connection with corruption. He is on ECL. Whole PIA is marred with corruption, plundering, bribery, and nepotism. Now, Afshan Khalid is new colorful feather added to the cap on PIA.

If she is convicted she will serve sentence in Paris. PIA should not punish her as she was not serving duty when incident occurred. However it is sad that people engage in such activities without any spiritual fear .

Adults should be ideals for the children and they should be trained in good behaviour and taught integrity and honesty. There was spot fixing in Indian IPL and big earners like S. Shreeshanth was involved in it. What prompted Hansie Cronje to involve in Cricket corruption. Many Pakistani cricketers were involved in spot fixing. These players admired by a proud nation brought the image of the nation down. The behaviour of a citizen reflects the image of a country. They should not be excused and just punishment should be meted out.

There are thieves in our society and there are laws to deal with such delinquents. She woman is caught committing a crime, it's an embarrassment. Let their criminal justice system take care of her which it would and that is that. Why this huffing and puffing. As far as PIA is concerned, I'm sure that they can't have a policy to keep a thief on their payroll, even if hired through unfair means like influenced by someone in power. Ideal would be if her referees are exposed so that we know who are those and if their own activities can also scrutinised.

If there's solid proof on the security cameras that this PIA flight attendant is guilty of shoplifting then PIA had no business granting her bail since she was not on duty when she engaged in this illegal conduct. Secondly, PIA should release her from her job, and at the same time provide her with psychological help since she may have some serious PTSD - especially if she's had any trauma inflicted upon her due to various reasons.

I love PIA so much and their persistent service to the nation. No one can match our national airline with such an immaculate staff and services throughout the world. on any day we can beat a small village bus service in a heartbeat. The air hostess probably thought she was in Pakistan and acted in normal fashion but lo and behold CCTV cameras work in Paris. Amazing work PIA, the true flagship on the motherland.

PIA is a company and flight attendant is an employee of the company. The company is only responsible for the employee during performing job responsibilities. She was off duty and shopping on her personal use. PIA should not involved itself in an off duty employees business. Let her solve her own issues.

it is not just the air hostess it is all over the airport. ground staff take out the valuable items from the luggage. even customs officer ask for money for let you go faster. neither they will harass you for nothing. these has been going on for decades. passengers does not know whom to complain.

Why this is the news - if someone has done any crime he or she should be punished accordingly and let the company decide what to do with her. There is no need to defame PIA on this issue. These type of events happening in every part of the world that for the reasons the rehab centers and jails are filled with criminals in USA, Canada, Japan or China.

One thing everybody is missing is shoplifting is a impulsive/behavirial disease. It can happen to any human irrespective of cast/creed/nation. First world countries understand and make public aware of it and develop ways to deal with it. This is an unforunatecase of person wih that problem born in pakistan, a society not yet capable of dealing with it.
