LAHORE: The anti-corruption unit of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued notices to cricketers Mohammad Irfan and Shahzaib Hasan on Friday that investigation against them was going to be started.

The players were allegedly involved in spot-fixing during the Pakistan Super League’s second edition, which concluded recently.

PCB media director Amjad Hussain told reporters that Irfan will appear before the anti-corruption unit on Monday while Shahzaib will present his case on Tuesday.

He said both had to deposit their cellphones before the unit and provide related information, which would decide further course of action, either to issue a charge-sheet or drop the case altogether.

Amjad added that if the players deny their involvement in spot-fixing, their case would be sent to the tribunal which is investigating corruption charges against Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, the other two players found allegedly involved in spot-fixing at the PSL.

The tribunal is headed by Lahore High Court’s former judge Haider Asghar Rizvi with ex-PCB chairman Tauqir Zia and former wicket-keeper Wasim Bari as members.

Sources told Dawn that according to some initial inquiry, Irfan and Shahzaib did meet some suspect persons in the UAE and declined their offer but they did not inform the PCB, their captain or manager about this development.

“Just before start of the PSL, detailed briefing was given to all players that they were bound to report to the anti-corruption unit or manager immediately after being contacted by any suspect person offering money for dirty practices,” the sources further said.

Irfan played eight matches for the Islamabad United despite being interrogated in Dubai while Shahzaib took part in two games for the Karachi Kings.
