MINGORA: Young boys orphaned by militancy grabbed most of the awards in the annual prize distribution ceremony of a philanthropic educational and boarding institute here on Tuesday.

The prize distribution ceremony of Khpal Kor Model School, an organisation for the orphaned children in Swat, was held at the hockey ground in Makan Bagh. The ceremony was attended by civil society members, social workers and family members of the students.

On the occasion, the school principal Qazi Sanaul Haq said the institution imparted free and quality education to the children orphaned by the militancy along with boarding facilities.

“The students are also imparted leadership skills and career counseling by organising special sessions of experts so they can choose their future according to their wish,” he said, adding the institution would continue its cause.

Over 900 orphan girls and boys are getting free education and boarding facilities in the institution, explained Mr Haq. Orphan children performed a variety of activities in the ceremony and received applause from the audience.

Mohammad Idrees of ninth grade, who is son of a fallen policeman and got first position, said he was really happing after grabbing the top position. “My mother will be happy to see my success as she wants me to become a successful man and serve my country. I am grateful to my institution for providing me free education and boarding facilities after my father was killed during the militancy,” he told Dawn.

Another student, Shoaib Khan, who got third position in grade eight, said he would become a doctor and serve humanity after completing his education.

District education officer Mohammad Amin, who was the chief guest, appreciated the skills of students and assured the institution of full cooperation in furthering its cause. He distributed cash prizes and awards among the position holding students and teachers.
