APROPOS the news item, ‘Potholes develop on reconstructed Rawal Road’ (Feb 26). It ought to be pointed out that, despite the passage of 17 years and completing its so-called carpeting life, the road was in excellent condition and did not require any repair work.

Whoever made the decision to reconstruct it should have instead considered allotting those precious funds to the many other roads in Rawalpindi, which are in a far more dilapidated state.

On several occasions it has been observed that reconstructed roads soon develop potholes within as little as six months time. This is either as a result of the incompetence of the departments concerned, or corruption in granting lucrative contracts to favoured individuals.

The residents of Rawalpindi have to pay for this twofold; with their taxes and then with the unending disruptions to traffic caused by construction and repair work. The authorities are, therefore, requested to be conscientious of how they are spending taxpayers’ money, and to what end.
