LARKANA, Jan 2: The Sindh Culture and Tourism Department, in collaboration with the District Government, Larkana, would celebrate Larkana district’s centenary in a befitting manner.
Ashique Hussain Memon, Secretary, Culture, Tourism and Social Welfare, said on Wednesday that the Sindh government would provide funds for the event of which an industrial and agricultural exhibition would also be a part.
Larkana was made a district after being carved out from Shikarpur District in 1901. It completed its hundred years in 2001.
He said the department was busy preparing a plan costing Rs20 million for the revival of tourist activities and recreational facilities at Moenjodaro, with the establishment of a library, auditorium, culture and computer centre.
The UNESCO, federal and Sindh governments would jointly fund this plan, he added.
SPSF ACTIVISTS: The activists of the Sindh Peoples Students Federation on Wednesday took out a procession from Kennedy Market, demanding withdrawal of all cases against Ms Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari.
They were led by district president Bisharat Bhutto.
Chanting slogans they converged on Jinnah Bagh where they burnt tyres, blocked the road and gave speeches.
Later, a group of around 20 students sat on a token hunger strike while others dispersed peacefully.
ZAKAT: Zakat should be distributed in the district through open katcheries ensuring the presence of area Nazims, said Larkana DCO Mohammad Hashim Leghari in a meeting of the district Zakat and Ushar committee the other day.
He also asked the concerned officials to inform the deserving people about Zakat distribution through announcement on loud speakers.
The meeting took stock of the Zakat distribution and decided to constitute committees in schools with their head masters as chairmen to prepare lists of poor students for the distribution of the allocated Zakat funds amongst them.
The chairmen of Deh committees would not escape legal action if they had recommended wrong names, the DCO said adding that transparency must be maintained in Zakat distribution.
The district officer Zakat, Tarique Hussain Dayo told the meeting that some chairmen of Deh Zakat committees have been suspended and inquiries were in progress following complaints against them.
These under-inquiry chairmen had been served with notices to return the Zakat money and their cases would be referred to the Anti-Corruption, he added.
He told the meeting that the district Zakat committee had received Rs72,295,540 out of which Rs43,845,000 had been spent on living allowances and Rs5,598,116, Rs2.8 million, Rs995,500 and Rs1,113,000 had been spent on education, health, social welfare and dowry respectively.
