80 arrested for kite flying

LAHORE: The capital city police on Sunday claimed to have arrested 80 people for flying kites, and seized kites and rolls of string from their possession.

Police also registered 80 cases against those arrested under the Prohibition of Kite Flying (Amendment) Act 2009. Under the law, kite-flying is prohibited all over the province and it was also declared a cognisable offence.

A spokesman said police on the directions of acting deputy inspector general (operations), Zahid Mehmood Gondal, launched a crackdown on people selling, making and flying kites.

He said that during the drive, Cantonment division police arrested 56 people and five each in city, Iqbal Town, and Civil Lines areas. Six people were arrested from Saddar and three from Model Town division. He said police also seized 500 kites and 160 rolls of string from their possession.

The spokesman also said that no one would be allowed to fly kites in the city, adding that they appealled to parents to stop their children from doing so.
