Satire website Khabaristan Times blocked in Pakistan

Satirical publication Khabaristan Times on Monday announced its website has been blocked in Pakistan.

In a statement posted to its official Facebook page, KT said the website had been blocked since Jan 25.

"There hasn't been any official notification from any regulatory authority regarding the website being banned," KT said, adding that it cannot be accessed anywhere in Pakistan.

The website does, however, appear to be available to users outside Pakistan.

According to sources in the telecommunication regulatory authority, the website had been blocked after receiving complaints about 'objectionable content'.

A renowned satire and parody website, KT has amassed a loyal social media following ─ 12,156 likes on Facebook ─ with its tongue-in-cheek commentary on Pakistani politics and the military.

The move comes in the backdrop of disappearances of social media activists earlier this month.

Pakistan is routinely ranked among the world's most dangerous countries for journalists, and reporting critical of security policies is considered a major red flag, with reporters at times detained, beaten and even killed.

I support this action as the website was just spreading false. Every country has a RIGHT to regulate properly and ban whatever is going against state or inciting violence or playing with the emotions of masses.

My friend you are misinformed, this website is similar to "The Onion" satirical website.

It was a satirical website and some of the articles were pure humor. Guess we Pakistanis cannot take a simple joke. There was nothing objectionable in the content of that website. Muhammad Abdul Moiz, you clearly haven't read any article of that site and just supporting this move out of sheer ignorance.

@SM No man, Thats not right. There are some limitations to freedom. You cannot do whatever you want too. There are some rules and regulations and regulators has all the rights to execute its policy. You cannot do anything you want to do on the account of freedom of speech..

Really!? Let's see, in a population of 200m, where more than 50% can't read let alone having the ability to read in English and on top of that having the capability to understand satire, leaves a number that is a drop in an ocean..The insecurity of the Government is unbelievable. On a related note, why isn't it this smooth in shutting up the hate preachers against minorities.

The website will now be read and enjoyed by people all around the world, but not in Pakistan. It cause people to think twice about themselves and the institutions governing them, which is right and proper to do instead of blindly accepting them.
