KARACHI: A retired official of Pakistan Navy was shot at and wounded on Sharea Faisal on Monday apparently over resistance to a robbery attempt, officials at the Tipu Sultan police station said.
They added that Akmal Kiyani, 64, was travelling in a car when gunmen riding a motorcycle intercepted him near Lal Kothi and opened fire on him when he resisted a robbery attempt.
He sustained two bullet wounds in the abdomen and on one knee and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was operated upon and later shifted to the ICU, said Gulshan SP Dr Fahad Ahmed.
The SP said Mr Kiyani drew cash from a bank and travelled some distance when the incident occurred, indicating that the suspects might have been following him.
However, Dr Ahmed said the police did not rule out the possibility of other motives for the incident such as an act of terrorism as a 9mm pistol was used in it, which is usually not used in street crime.
The investigators collected two spent bullet casings from the crime scene.
